Belle Marie Philson, daughter of Greg and Kim Philson, is a student at St. Patrick School.
Why this student was selected: School officials said, “Belle Marie is an active participant in school. She enjoys learning and wants to make it fun. She notices when something is needed and is an eager volunteer for all types of projects within the school. She helps teachers, classmates, and students in other classes. She does her work to the best of her ability every time and is always willing to ask questions to help herself and other people. She is a joy to teach.”
Awards and Recognition: Pope’s List honor roll for all A’s.
Civic and Volunteer Involvement: Active in Girl Scouts; tutors younger students in spelling and reading.
Athletic Accomplishments: Participant on school volleyball and basketball teams.
Religious Activities: Member of junior high Mass choir, reader and usher at school Masses.
Outside Achievements: Part of Girl Scouts’ 1,000 Boxes Club, participant in Pius X Junior High Honor Choir and Honor Band.
Hobbies and Interests: Enjoys reading, watching Formula 1 racing, and playing volleyball; one of six children in an active family
Paisley Coleman, daughter of Steven and Abby Coleman, is a 6th-grade student at Scott Middle School.
Why was this student nominated? School officials said, “Paisley is a remarkable student known for her kindness, integrity, and strong work ethic. She approaches each day with a positive attitude and a genuine desire to do her best, tackling every task with dedication. Her trustworthiness and reliability make her an invaluable member of the classroom, as she can always be counted on to help others or lead by example. Paisley’s warm and welcoming nature ensures that everyone around her feels valued, contributing to a positive and inclusive environment.”
They added: “In addition to her strong character, Paisley excels academically. She is organized, focused, and hardworking, consistently engaging in her learning and actively participating in class. Her motivation to succeed is evident, and she is always willing to lend a hand to classmates when needed. Paisley’s positive attitude, bright smile, and respectful demeanor make her a joy to have in the classroom, and she has become a natural leader who enhances the experience for everyone.”

Cecelia Wilson, daughter of Melissa and Matthew Wilson, is an 8th-grade student at St. Joseph School.
Why was this student nominated? School officials said, “Cecelia gives her all in everything she does. Whether it’s sports, school work or volunteering, she does everything with talent and effort. She respects others and lives her faith.”
Civic and volunteer involvement: Student Council member; Student Mentor; part of the Student Council Leadership Committee.
Athletic accomplishments: participates in club volleyball at VCN; member of the volleyball, basketball, and track teams at St. Joseph School.
Religious activities: reads at Stations of the Cross and Mass; active in Youth Ministry.
Outside achievements: part of UNL’s NHRI program; nominated to attend the Junior National Young Leaders Conference.
Hobbies and outside interests: Cecelia said, “I love baking, writing, and reading. God is a huge part of my life.”
Addie Makovicka, daughter of Kim and Jamie Makovicka, is an 8th-grade student at St. Michael’s Catholic School.
Awards and recognition: Christian Courtesy Award.
Why was this student nominated? School officials said, “Addie strives for excellent in everything she does. Whether it’s academics or athletics, you will find Addie trying her best. She is kind to others and quietly leads her peers in the right direction. She embodies our motto of ‘learn, serve, lead, and succeed.'”
Civic and volunteer involvement: Addie helps with the school bank. She also participates in and volunteers for parish activities, such as the Fall Festival.
Athletic accomplishments: Addie’s team won State Cup honors for soccer three years in a row.
Religious activities: regular attendance at Mass, buddy for younger students at Mass.
Hobbies and outside interests: Soccer, basketball; enjoys playing outside with friends and family; also enjoys spending time with friends and family.
 
 
Jackson Baugh, son of Tiffany Baugh and Brian Baugh, is an 8th-grade student at Scott Middle School.
Why was this student nominated?
School officials said, “Jackson has been nominated for his strong character, his leadership at Scott Middle School, and for his academic effort and excellence.  Jackson is fun and funny, has a positive attitude, is an excellent student, and is a quiet leader.”
Civic and volunteer involvement:
Jackson volunteers with his family at People’s City Mission.
Athletic accomplishments:
Jackson participates in flag football, soccer, cross-country, basketball, and runs track. He also does American Ninja Warrior and qualified for the World’s Championship last year.
Religious activities:
Jackson volunteers to help plan and carry out activities for his youth group at church.
Hobbies and outside interests:
Jackson loves all things sports-related. He also loves playing board games and video games. He works at Nebraska Ninja as a Junior Ninja coach.
Jelena Linares, daughter of Jesus and Marlena Linares, is a 6th-grade student at Pound Middle School. 
Why this student was nominated: School officials said, “Jelena is independent, bright, and kind. She loves to learn and is inquisitive, embracing each topic we cover in Humanities. She’s organized and takes care of her materials and learning in a way that shows how mature she is. She’s kind to students and teachers alike and is a joy to have in class.”
Awards and recognition: Jelena was given the GRIT award for her exceptional dedication to academic excellence. She is on the Honor Roll and a part of the Honors Cadre. She has an optimistic and graceful demeanor which is evident in her interactions with classmates. She confidently seeks clarification when needed and promptly engages in tasks. Beyond being a classroom role model, Jelena is a proactive leader who prioritizes learning goals.
Civic and volunteer engagement: Jelena provides tutoring for younger students. She willingly assumes responsibilities pertaining to her younger siblings, Jenica and Jaedren, as she enjoys helping them. She also assists in packaging and delivering food to those in need.
Athletic accomplishment: Jelena diligently trains in Taekwondo at Master Lee’s, proudly holding a Red Belt (Advanced) with her sights set on the Black Belt.
Religious activities: Jelena attends weekly church services, actively takes part in Sabbath school, engages in Bible study, and finds joy in deepening her understanding of God’s love. 
Hobbies/Activities: She also enjoys engaging in activities such as reading, swimming, pickleball, badminton, and volleyball. She and her siblings have three guinea pigs named Stitch, Grayson, and Fifi.
Other comments: “Jelena demonstrates kindness and compassion. Jelena’s presence in our family is a genuine blessing, and we take great joy in witnessing her continued growth and success as a young woman and scholar.”a
Siddharth Sheril, son Punnya Ranjit Sheril, is a 7th-grade student at Schoo Middle School.
Why this student was nominated: School officials said, “Siddharth is a straight-A student who is an excellent example of what a student is. He is a leader, a scholar, and an all-around great student. He is an excellent peer example.”
Civic and volunteer involvement: He takes advantage of any and all academic opportunities he’s given.
Athletic accomplishments: Involved in tennis for four years and has won tournaments. Also competes in cross-country and track meets.
Religious activities: Siddharth is very liberal and open to all religious ideas around the world.
Outside achievements: Active in cultural performances in Indian events.
Hobbies and outside interests: Has been training in piano and saxophone.

Layna DeBuhr, daughter of Jessica DeBuhr and Howard Brown, Madeline Hendrix-Jones and John Hendrix-Jones, is a 7th-grade student at Dawes Middle School.

Why this student was nominated: School officials said, “Layna works hard in school and pushes herself to reach her goals. She is a leader in the classroom by being a role model and always displays strong Dawes scholar skills. Layna is a genuine, kind, and mature scholar, making her a trusted peer for classmates to talk to. She is always willing to help classmates and teachers with a smile. Layna’s involvement in school and outside-of-school activities is phenomenal, and she balances her schedule easily.”

Alaina Broyles, daughter of Robert and Emily Broyles, is a student at St. Patrick Catholic School of Lincoln.
Why this student was nominated: School officials said, “Alaina does good work in the classroom. She participates in class and shows that her education is important to her. She enjoys the process of learning. She knows what the learning environment is supposed to look and feel like; she does what she can to help keep that going. She volunteers to help when needed, whether it’s a task in the classroom or other jobs within the school. She is willing to try new things and offer feedback to help make things better for everyone.”
Awards and Recognition: Honor roll each quarter.
Civic and Volunteer Involvement: Assists with 4-H STEM Club and has tutored a younger student with spelling.
Religious Activities: Prays daily and attends Mass with family.
Outside Achievements: Soloist in St. Patrick Christmas program.
Hobbies and Interests: Practices piano weekly and participates in recitals, sings in the St. Patrick Choir, does lap swimming, and attends Pius X Performing Arts Camp.
Gavin Montecuollo, son of Dawn Montecuollo, is a 6th-grade student at Saint John the Apostle School.
Why this student was nominated: School officials said, “Gavin is and always had been a supportive and caring friend. He is welcoming to all students. He usually has a smile on his face and a can-do attitude. When he is confused, he is confident in seeking the support of his classmates and teachers. He leads by example. Gavin’s joy radiates wherever he is found. He is a hard worker, makes positive choices, and is friendly.”
Awards and recognition: Gavin was included in the Principal’s Honor Roll. 
Civic and Volunteer Involvement: Gavin is a member of the Saint John’s Ambassadors.  
Athletic Accomplishments: Gavin plays soccer for the Hawks. 
Religious Activities: Gavin attends daily Mass. 
Hobbies and outside Interests: He enjoys sports and spending time with family and friends.

Ryan Huber, son of Matt and Leah Huber, is an 8th-grade student at North American Martyrs School.

Why this student was nominated: School officials said, “Ryan is friendly, polite, and respectful; is kind to others, involved in school activities, and has a strong academic performance.”

Awards and recognition: in 7th grade, he placed first in Science Fair in Physical Science; has attained Silver Honor Roll every quarter since sixth grade.

Athletic accomplishments: finished second in discus and third in shot put at Catholic School Track Meet; plays basketball and golf.

Religious activities: altar server; was named Server of the Month in January 2024.

Hobbies and outside interests: CAD Design and 3-D printing; Frisbee golf; archery, and bowling.

Dominic Anguiano, son of John and Linda Anguiano, is an 8th-grade student at Pound Middle School.
Why was the student nominated? School officials said: Dominic is a great example of what Pound students should strive to be. His work ethic in the classroom, leadership, and kindness to others is extremely valuable to our school community.” 
Civic and volunteer involvement: Member of Pound Pals for all three years of middle school.
Athletic accomplishments: Dominic plays baseball and ran cross-country at Pound this year. He was recognized as an Academic Archer at the 2025 Nebraska – National Archery in the Schools – Regional Tournament.
Religious activities: Member of the tech team and Vertical Student Ministry worship team at Capital City Christian Church. 
Outside achievements: Last summer Dominic was cast as Teen Terk in the Pinewood Bowl Theater performance of “Tarzan.” He has also participated in Lincoln Community Playhouse performances of “Finding Nemo Jr,” “Charlotte’s Web”, and “The Greatest Christmas Pageant Ever.” 
Hobbies and Outside Interests: Music, theater, and photography.
Faith Schreiner, daughter of Chris and Courtney Schreiner, is a 6th-grade student at Saint John the Apostle School.
Why this student was nominated: School officials said: “Faith Schreiner is incredibly kind and her positive attitude is contagious! Faith is very friendly and goes out of her way to include others. She is a kind, responsible student who is often described as mature, reliable, and dependable. Faith is a curious and introspective student. She is driven in her studies. She is, and always has been, a supportive and caring friend. She is welcoming and funny. She is bright, and so is her smile. She is gentle and kind. Faith exhibits the characteristics of a model student, even when there is a strong temptation to do the contrary.”
Awards and recognition: Faith is a member of the JETS Honor Roll and has received the Christian Courtesy Award. 
Civic and volunteer involvement: Faith is a JETS Ambassador and an active member of the Saint John’s Builders Club, Little Flowers, and Youth Choir. She has participated in ringing bells with the Salvation Army and is involved with the school musical.
Athletic accomplishments: Faith has played soccer since kindergarten. She has been involved in archery since 4th grade. She earned gold and bronze medals in the archery competition during the Cornhusker State Games. Religious activities: Faith attends daily Mass and sings in the Youth Choir. 
Hobbies and outside interests: Faith plays the flute and enjoys drawing, music, and reading.
Malyia Derozan, daughter of Ebony Booker, is a 6th-grade student at Schoo Middle School.
Why was this student nominated? School officials said: “Malyia has impeccable character, is deeply responsible, and has a passionate love of learning and contagious optimism.”
Civic and volunteer involvement: She has volunteered helping with a clothing drive.
Athletic accomplishments: She has won an award for volleyball and is planning to play volleyball more.
Religious activities: Spiritual and holistic.
Outside achievements: Likes to do well at painting and hopes to become an artist.
Hobbies and outside interests: Likes to draw and paint; enjoys arts and crafts and playing volleyball.
Rafael Gutierrez, son of Juan Carlos and Jennifer Gutierrez, is an 8th-grade student at St. Joseph School.
Why was this student nominated? School officials said: “Rafael is hard-working, kind and respectful. He leads by his positive example.”
Civic and volunteer involvement: Two years’ service on Student Council; serves as a Student Mentor.
Athletic accomplishments: Participates in cross-country, basketball and soccer throughout the year.
Religious activities: altar server at St. Joseph’s Church; active in Eucharistic Adoration.
Outside achievements: Earned a Superior rating in the National Federation of Music Clubs in spring 2023 and spring 2024.
Hobbies and outside interests: piano (seven years); reading.
Other comments: In the ‘St. Joseph’s Science Fair, he won second place overall in seventh grade and first place overall in eighth grade.
 
Seham Koko, daughter of Ilham and Angalo Koko, is a 6th-grade student at Dawes Middle School.

Why was this student nominated?:
School officials said: “Seham was nominated by the teachers at Dawes because she stands out in many ways. She will email teachers to get what she needs. She submits high quality work. She is a role model when working with a partner in class. She is polite and goes above and beyond by doing extra work in class. She really values her education, and it shows.”
Civic and volunteer involvement
School officials said: “Seham makes a difference in her community, at home and at school. At Dawes, she is a good friend and considerate of all peers. She is a positive asset to the culture at Dawes. At home, she helps her family by cleaning the house.”
Athletic accomplishments
Seham participates in sports outside of school. She is part of a basketball club and a volleyball club.
Hobbies and outside interests
Seham loves to draw. She especially enjoys drawing people. She listens to music, like Frank Ocean. She likes cats and has a cat named Brownie.
 
 
Brynlee Guenther, daughter of Paul and Katie Guenther, is an 8th-grade student at North American Martyrs School.
Why was this student nominated? School officials said: “Brynlee is an exceptional student both academically and socially. She is consistently showing that she is a bright, independent learner while leading by her positive example. She’s involved in many school activities and has a great rapport with teachers and staff.”
Civic and volunteer involvement: Babysits siblings, cousins, and friends; Student Council member, seventh and eighth grade; Youth Choir member, seventh grade.
Athletic accomplishments: Dancer for 10 years, including six with the Company Dance Team at her dance studio; school volleyball team member, seventh and eighth grade.
Awards and recognition: High Honor Roll every quarter; Accelerated  Reader.
Religious activities: Church youth group; Bible study with group during lunch at school; active member of parish.
Outside achievements: has held roles in school musical.
Hobbies and outside interests: dance, creating art, being with friends and family, baking and cooking.
Other comments: School officials added: “Brynlee is a very hard worker and very disciplined. She is always doing the right thing and is an amazing role model to her siblings and friends.”

Dani Davis, daughter of Shawn and Peggy Davis, is an 8th-grade student at St. Michael Catholic School.
Why was this student nominated? School officials said: “Dani is a dynamic young lady who lives her faith. She is an excellent friend to everyone and excels in academics as well. Dani consistently displays a positive attitude and is a role model for others.”
Awards and Recognition: Christian Courtesy Award.
Civic and volunteer involvement: She reads at Sunday Mass and often volunteers to help with the sports book and scoreboard at school events. Dani bakes cookies with the nuns and is volunteering to help with the Villa Marie dance performance, a partnership with St. Michael School.
Athletic accomplishments: Participates in Laser basketball, Pulse soccer, St. Michael volleyball, basketball, track, and cross-country.
Religious activities: Attends Mass every Sunday, daily Mass for school, and mentoring younger students at Mass.
Outside achievements: Leadership camp at UNL.
Hobbies and outside interests: Dani enjoys sports, reading, and playing outside with her siblings.

 

Lola Bunz, daughter of Brent and Tamara Bunz, is an 8th-grade student at St. Joseph School.

Why was this student nominated?

School officials said: “Lola gives her best effort on every assignment. Her dedication is evident especially in her excellent writing. She is a role model in the respect she shows to adults and peers.”

Hobbies and outside interests: Lola has a small business that sells custom crochet crafts.

Jhett Keller, son of Chuck and Kimberly Keller, is a 7th-grade student at North American Martyrs School.
Why was this student nominated? School officials said: “Jhett was nominated for being a hardworking and kind student who is a good example to his peers.”
Awards and recognition: Silver Honor Roll every quarter since sixth grade.
Civic and volunteer involvement: Volunteered to clean tables at Knights of Columbus fish fry. Helps neighbors when needed.
Athletic accomplishments: Member of the Mustangs basketball team.
Religious activities: Altar server, attends daily Mass, reads at Mass, attends Totus Tuus.
Hobbies and outside interests: Spending time with friends, listening to music, playing saxophone, fishing, golfing, and playing video games.

Jahlyssa Valentine, daughter of Kala Valentine
and Shelton Valentine, is a 7th-grade student at Dawes Middle School.

Why was this student nominated? School officials
said: “Jahlyssa is always kind and respectful. She has a high level of
integrity, making her trustworthy while always following Dawes CARE
expectations. Jahlyssa is a role model for peers and always offers to help
peers and teachers. She looks for more opportunities to learn and is
academically motivated. Jahlyssa is driven for success and advocates for her
plans for her future achievements.”

Estrella Mercado, daughter of Molly and Sergio Mercado. is an 8th-grade student at St. Patrick School.
Why was this student nominated? School officials said:  “Estrella has been nominated for her demeanor in and out of the classroom. She’s a generally quiet student in a learning setting but stays focused and on track. She wants to achieve for herself and is willing to work for it. She is willing to help others and work with anyone. Estrella is fun and playful in smaller groups where she lets her personality shine. She sets a positive example for others of what it looks like to take school seriously but also have some fun doing the work.”
Awards and Recognition: St. Patrick Honor Roll (2019, 2022, 2023, 2024); Sacred Heart Kingdom Builder Award (2016, 2018, 2019).

Civic and Volunteer Involvement: Volunteers for Catholic Social Services and Sacred Heart Church.

Athletic Accomplishments: Participated in Girls on the Run (2021), St. Patrick volleyball team (2023 and 2024), St. Patrick Track and Field (2024), and played softball (2022-2024).

Religious Activities: Attended Camp Kateri’s Campin’ with the Marians (2023-2024).

Outside Achievements: NHRI Leadership Mentoring at UNL (2022).

Hobbies and Other Interests: Art, reading, building.

Additional Information: Participated in Children’s Business Fair in Fall 2020 and Spring 2021; has taken various courses at the LUX Art Center; participated in band (2021-2023) and Pius X Honor Choir (2022-2024).
Liam Havlat, son of Nick and Dawn Havlat, is an 8th-grade student at St. Michael School.
Why was this student nominated? School officials said: “Liam makes the choice every day to be a good person. He strives to do his best work, demonstrates a love for learning, especially history, and is so very creative. Students and adults enjoy spending time with Liam as he cares very much about people and is an excellent conversationalist. Liam embodies the school motto of learn, serve, lead, succeed.”
Civic and volunteer involvement: Liam volunteers at the Lincoln Children’s Zoo as part of the Zoo Crew program. He also volunteers with Hope of the Poor mission.
Athletic accomplishments: Liam is a member of the St. Michael track and cross-country teams. He also competes on the Crete Swim Team.
Religious Activities: Liam is an active member of the St. Michael Parish and School. He serves and reads at Mass.
Hobbies and outside interests: Liam enjoys being a part of drama club, learning history, and trying foods from other countries.
 
 
Saktheara (“Lily”) Sok, daughter of Hosanna Chea Sok and Duc (“Stephen”) Le, is a 7th-grade student at North American Martyrs School.
Why was this student nominated? School officials said: “Lily is always volunteering to help her teachers and peers. She is always positive and encourages her peers to see the good in each day.”
Civic and volunteer involvement: Student Council. She also helps give out food for the poor with her grandmother.
Religious activities: She attends daily Mass and volunteers to read petitions. She also leads prayers during holidays.
Hobbies and outside interests: crafting, art, shopping, cooking, baking, and volleyball.

Easton DeLong, son of John and Nicole DeLong, is an 8th-grade student at Dawes Middle School.


Why was this student nominated?: School officials said: “This student has demonstrated incredible growth throughout the year, consistently working to improve both academically and socially. His hard work, positive attitude, and willingness to help others have not only transformed his own learning experience but have also helped his classmates. Now a leader in the classroom, he sets an example of perseverance that has made a lasting impact on our learning community.”

Athletic accomplishments: competes in amateur boxing; earned Most Improved Award in wrestling.

Gabriel Ross, son of Laura Ross, is an 8th-grade student at St. Joseph School.
Why was this student nominated?: School officials said: “Gabriel’s respect for his teachers and peers along with his dedication to his work makes him outstanding.”
Civic and volunteer involvement: Matt Talbot Kitchen volunteer; helps neighbors when needed..
Athletic accomplishments: Has participated in five half-marathons; participates in track and field.
Religious activities: Leadership camp; prayer.
Outside achievements: Drumming award from music teacher.
Hobbies and outside interests: drumming, running, sports.
Evan Wandzilak, son of Brenda and Brian Wandzilak, is an 8th-grade student at Blessed Sacrament School.
Why was this student nominated?: School officials said: “He is a diligent and joyful student who greets each day  with anticipation.”
Awards and recognition: Evan’s team won first place for Field Day. Evan is known by his classmates as “the Boy Scout.” (He holds the rank of First Class in Boy Scouts.)
Civic and volunteer involvement: He is a volunteer at Husker football games and volunteers at local races in which his dad is involved.
Athletic accomplishments: Evan participated on an archery team that qualified for nationals, and he has been a national qualifier in cross country. Recently, he was clocked in 6 minutes, 28 seconds in the mile run.
Religious activities: He serves at every 8:30 a.m. Mass at Blessed Sacrament and is a frequent reader at school Masses.
Hobbies and outside interests: He enjoys playing video games, reading, and playing sports.
Other comments: Evan added: “I am great at following rules and pretty responsible.”

Civic and Volunteer Involvement: Zachary has been a Builders Club class representative for two years. He has been in the Youth Choir for three years and Honor Choir for one year. He has participated in the school musical and has helped with the Husker chair backs project.

Junior Lopez Tema, son of Josue Lopez Palacios, Hilda Strehle and Andrew Strehle, is an 8th-grade student at Park Middle School.
Why was this student nominated?  Junior is a native Spanish speaker from Guatemala. He has made amazing progress in learning English and works hard to maintain good grades in all his classes. He is friendly and outgoing to teachers and students.

Thatcher Plugge, son of Amanda and Brian Plugge, is an 8th-grade student at Pound Middle School.

Why was the student nominated?:  Thatcher is an excellent scholar and is kind to his peers. He works very hard to please adults and fellow students. He is always respectful, very humble, and is a joy to have in class.

Civic and Volunteer Involvement:  Thatcher is on the Pound Student Council, serving as vice president.  He enjoys a good leadership opportunity.  Every Thursday he wears a Hawaiian shirt, to match his laid-back attitude and celebration that the weekend is almost here. 

Athletic Accomplishments: Thatcher really enjoys playing tennis, just for FUN!  He has recently picked up pickleball with his brother.

Outside Achievements:  Thatcher plays the double-string bass.  He has been a member of YES and JYO, select orchestras in Lincoln.  He also plays in the Pound Select Jazz Band, earning top scores and placing in state competitions.

Hobbies and Outside Interests:  Thatcher enjoys spending his free time with family and friends.  He enjoys online video games with friends in other states.   Dungeons and Dragons is a favorite, spending hours eating and socializing with his friends.  Since early childhood, Thatcher has enjoyed LEGOS.  He still enjoys building and creating; he has now started to enjoy the art of sorting and organizing his Lego collection.

 Eli Siebert, son of Tina Siebert, is an 8th-grade student at St. Patrick School.
Why was this student nominated? He does a lot of really great things in the classroom and out. He is responsible and takes care of his tasks without reminders. He is willing to put himself out there and try new things. He relates well with his classmates and gets along with everyone. He participates in classes and is a lot of fun to teach.

Why was this student nominated?  Yara Nassrat is a great role model for her peers at Park Middle School. She shows kindness and respect and she greets all of her friends and teachers with a warm smile. Yara exhibits a growth mindset whenever she encounters challenging problems and she never gives up. Yara is a strong member of the Park community. She is involved with AVID and enjoys the field trips where she can go to elementary schools to mentor younger students. Next year, she is excited to join a high school soccer team. The teachers and staff at Park are proud of who Yara is as a person and the choices she makes in and out of the classroom.

Why was this student nominated? Jessa was nominated because she is a talented individual with a generous heart. She is a responsible student and a good example of what it looks like to use time wisely. She knows classroom routines well and helps keep them in place. She completes schoolwork efficiently and submits thoughtful, quality work. She is an analytical thinker, and often notices things that others may miss. Jessa enjoys interacting with younger students and often volunteers to help them.

Travion Johnson, son of Victoria and Drew Edmond, is a 7th-grade at Pound Middle School.

Why was this student nominated? Travion is a kind and considerate student. Each day, he demonstrates kindness in his interactions with peers, no matter their social standing. Trey is always willing to lend a helping hand to his classmates and teachers. He completes high-quality work and seeks information/opportunities to learn new things. 

Awards and Recognition – Trey has maintained a 3.5 GPA or higher throughout his middle school years and regularly puts in extra effort to ensure that his grades reflect his hard work and dedication to school. His teachers recognize him frequently for being a standout student. He is also a member of a school group that focuses on new ideas to implement at Pound.

Civic and Volunteer involvement – This past January, Trey was selected to participate in the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Rally. He fulfilled the role of reading a write-up about the historic song “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” which was sung during the Civil Rights Era in the 1950’s.

Athletic accomplishments – Trey enjoys playing football and basketball, and currently plays AAU basketball through Supreme. He plays flag football through the YMCA, and will soon be starting a spring season of 7v7 football through Lincoln Youth Football. Each day before his practices and/or games, Trey commits himself to a home workout to focus on enhancing his skills in each of these sports. He has developed so much throughout the years, and was a phenomenal leader on the teams he was a part of In 6th grade. He won a knockout contest at Pound and was then selected to participate in a championship knockout contest at a Lincoln Southeast basketball game, competing with other middle schoolers throughout Lincoln..

Hobbies and outside interests – Trey enjoys playing family sports games, drawing, video games, spending time with his younger brothers, and making his household laugh.

 

Other comments – Trey is such a wonderful role model for those around him. He has always stood up for what’s right and encourages others around him to be themselves. Hobbies & Outside Interests: Carter loves hanging out with friends, online

gaming, playing basketball, swimming, and football. He enjoys world history and

is interested in aerospace engineering and aviation. Carter has attended several

airshows in Lincoln, the Sound of Speed Airshow in St. Joseph, Mo., and an airshow

 

at Miramar Airforce Base in San Diego, Calif.

 Navy Reisinger, daughter of Jonathan and Alicia Reisinger, is a 6th-grade student at Park Middle School.
Why was this student nominated? Navy Reisinger is an exceptional student and leader. She excels in her academics at Park and puts forth extraordinary effort and quality in her work. Navy is reliable and always willing to give a helping hand. 
Interests and hobbies: She enjoys writing her own stories, reading, and drawing. She was able to showcase her love for the arts by participating in the Park Middle School play titled “The Wind in the Willows”. Outside of school, she participates in a Youth Council group. 
Favorite classes: Navy enjoys several of her classes at Park; Healthy Living and Math are two of her favorites. 
Future: She has dreams of one day becoming a surgeon.

 Atley Janecek, daughter of Joel and Torri Janecek, is an 8th-grade student at Lincoln Lutheran Middle/High School.

Awards: High Honor roll each semester at Lincoln Lutheran.

Why was the student nominated? She is an extremely hard worker, a great classmate, and a genuinely good kid. She never shies away from a challenge and is always willing to work with any of her classmates. She uses her time productively and always sets a good example for others.

 Civic and volunteer involvement:

  • Member of Lincoln Lutheran’s C.O.L.T. (Civic Opportunity Leadership Team);
  • Messiah Color Run volunteer;
  • Participant in Lincoln Lutheran service days.

Athletic Accomplishments:  

  • As a 7th grader at the Nebraska State Middle School Track & Field Championships she placed 3rd in the LJ, 4th in the 100H and 5th in the 100;
  • Lincoln Lutheran MS 100H school record holder;
  • Lincoln Lutheran MS LJ school record holder;
  • Member of Lincoln Lasers Basketball Club;
  • 2-year starter on Lincoln Lutheran MS Basketball Team.

Ava Colee, daughter of Ashley and Brad Colee, is a 6th-grade student at Saint John the Apostle School.

Why this student was nominated?:  Ava is thoughtful and attentive to the needs of others, consistently takes responsibility for her work and regularly strives to do her best. She is attentive, bright, cooperative, conscientious on making sure her school work is done well and in a timely manner, and is gentle but with a drive to complete projects put in front of her. Ava is an outstanding student who is selfless and caring. Even in the face of adversity, Ava is level-headed, patient, and kind to all those around her. Ava is a good and genuine friend. She is dedicated to her studies, tries her best always, and her smile lights up a room.

Awards & recognition: Jetsetter Award and Principal’s Honor Roll (all A’s in all classes).

Civic and volunteer involvement: Ava is a member of Student Ambassadors, a member of Builders Club, and is actively involved in school and church activities.

Athletic accomplishments: Lincoln Rockets softball, Cornhusker basketball, Flying Aces volleyball,

and Saint John’s cross country.

Religious activities: Ava attends daily Mass, goes to Confession monthly, and attends Totus Tuus.

Outside achievements: Two-time winner of the Knights of Columbus free-throw competition.

Hobbies & outside interests: Ava enjoys hanging out with friends, watching and playing sports, and

spending time with family.

Santino R. Macias, son of Dionray and Teresa Macias, is an 8th-grade student at St. Patrick School.
Why was this student nominated? Santino is a highly-involved student who participates in classes. He asks good questions and is helpful to other students when he understands something well and can share that knowledge. Santino is a curious thinker and often wonders about where things came from or how things may have been. He applies his fascination with the past to the present, often creating good outcomes for himself through hard work and determination. He’s a good friend to others and a positive role model for younger students in the school. Santino is a great classroom citizen.
Awards: Honor roll each year since 2nd grade, St. Patrick activities award 2023, St. Mary’s Student of the Week.
Civic and Volunteer involvement: 6-year “Grinch Fest” volunteer with Food Bank, Veterans’ Parade participant.
Athletics: Participates on St. Patrick bowling team.
Religious activities: Altar server; attends Totus Tuus camp; Walk for Life and Life Chain participant; attends daily Mass.
Outside achievements: 1st place Classic Car Show teammate winner; Young Eagles participant; Heritage School award; Junior Achievement participant.
Hobbies and other interests: Antique collecting, small-town adventures, primitives collecting, writing/authoring, vintage/antique machine enthusiast, stoneware and bottle enthusiast.

Nick Baires, son of Lesva Kobryn and Jose Baires, is a 7th-grade student at Park Middle School.
Why was the student nominated? Nick consistently gives his best effort. His work is detailed and it always exceeds expectations. Nick is a student that teachers can depend on when they need someone who is reliable, trustworthy, and kind to others. Nick has a genuine passion for learning that inspires his teachers and his classmates. He is a natural leader in all that he does. Nick’s favorite school subject is math. 
Activities, athletics: He plays the saxophone and was a member of the Park Middle School soccer team as well as the basketball team. He participates in the Educational Talent Search through UNL and he is the president of the Park Green Team. 
Future: Nick has dreams of pursuing a career in the field of computer science.
 

Brielle Castens, daughter of Aaron & Maria Castens, is a 7th-grade student at Lincoln Lutheran Middle/High School.

Why the student was nominated:  Brielle is an academically conscientious student who is hard working and an excellent example for her peers.  She is polite and kind-hearted. 

Awards: High Honor Roll.

Volunteer involvement: Vacation Bible School leader, server at Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach.

Athletic accomplishments: Gymnastics medalist at various levels, variety of places in track sprints and relays.

Religious activities: Confirmation, mission trips, Middle School Ministry.

Hobbies and outside interests: gymnastics, track, baking, band, friends.

Jared Ehlers, son of Jason and Colette Ehlers, grade 8, North American Martyrs School.
Why was this student nominated? He is polite, friendly to peers and adults, a dedicated student who works hard to succeed, and is a positive leader.
Civic and volunteer involvement: Helps serve meals to veterans at the Victory Park veterans’ residence; and helps each year  with the Rebecca Miller Memorial Shamrock Showdown hockey tournament for ages 8 and under.
Athletic accomplishments: Member of Lincoln Junior Stars bantam hockey team and the Lincoln Prodigy Legends 13U baseball team. Played for the Police/Sandhills team in the Lincoln Youth Football League.
Religious  activities: Member of North American Martyrs Parish, where he is an altar boy and participates in liturgical duties.
Hobbies: Photography and video games.
Brielle Gyhra, daughter of Laurie and Wesley Gyhra, is a 6th-grade student at Saint John the Apostle School.
Why was she nominated? The Middle School Team nominated Brielle because she is dedicated to her studies and asks thoughtful questions. She is a hard worker, helpful in the classroom, very kind to classmates and staff members, usually greets others with a smile, and is very responsible and respectful.
Awards: Principal’s Honor Roll (A’s in all classes).
Civic and volunteer Involvement: Helps with church cleaning, and donates toys to the children’s ward at CHI Health Saint Elizabeth Hospital.
Athletic accomplishments: BElevé Dance Company team member, Lincoln Midwest Ballet Company (LMBC) “Nutcracker” production cast member, 1st place in girls’ 400-meter race, 3rd place in girls’ 200-meter race, 1st place in girls’ mile.
Religious activities: Attends daily Mass, member of Saint John’s Youth Choir, participant in Totus Tuus.
Outside achievements: Received a top award for her jewelry entry in the Custer County Fair open class, and a dance scholarship in hip-hop.
Hobbies & outside interests: Enjoys hanging out with her friends, sewing, reading, baking, and cheering for the Husker football and Husker volleyball teams.
